He knew great success. And, he knew great tragedy. During his lifetime, Mr. Mueller faced challenges with grace and humility. Here is his story. Here’s what inspired him to act as a force for good.

1860

Sebastian Mueller is born in Bavaria.

1869

Mr. Mueller’s mother dies. The 9-year-old orphan is raised by his father’s sister.

1884

24-year-old Mr. Mueller immigrates to Pittsburgh to work in the factory of his cousin H.J. Heinz.

1888

Sebastian Mueller marries Elizabeth Heinz, the younger sister of H.J. Heinz.

1892

Daughters Elsa Marguerite (3 months) and Alma Eleonore (20 months) succumb to diphtheria.

1893

A son named Stanford Leland is born. Unfortunately, Stanford dies in 1912 at age 18 from scarlet fever.

1912

Mr. Mueller purchases farm property in Richland Township, Pennsylvania, where he can raise horses and host Heinz company outings. He names this summer estate Eden Hall Farm.

1934

Wife Elizabeth dies. With no heirs, Mr. Mueller wills his estate to establish Eden Hall Farm as a respite home for women. 

1937

First labor strike at Heinz begins, an event that devastates Mr. Mueller.

1938

Heinz labor strike ends, and Mr. Mueller retires.

11/17/1938

Mr. Mueller dies at the family home in Glenshaw, Pennsylvania.

1983

Mr. Mueller’s legacy blooms as Eden Hall Foundation is established to benefit the education, health care and human services.

5/1/2008

Eden Hall Foundation gifts Eden Hall Farm to Chatham University, now known as the Eden Hall Farm Campus of Chatham University.

2008 – Present

Eden Hall Foundation continues the legacy of Mr. Mueller by engaging with organizations whose missions improve the quality of life for all throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.
